This is an interesting list; it includes job titles you would expect. It is extra helpful because it lists the “Killer Management Traits” needed for each position.

I think the salary averages must be weighted a lot towards California and the Northeast… Salaries this high are hard to find in Atlanta.

These two articles, both from the same issue of Baseline Magazine, seem to need to be taken together:

• Four Ways CIOs can Impact the Bottom Line is about a Gartner report recommending that CIO’s get entrepreneurial and how to do that.
• A CIO’s Lot is not a Happy One discusses the reasons CIOs are among the least satisfied of executives, which in large part is that they “want to be someplace where they feel their opinions are valued, where people listen to what they want to say and where they have the opportunity to express a point of view”, Dave Opton of ExecuNet is quoted as saying.

Perhaps a CIO who can embrace the first article’s thoughts can avoid the scenarios painted in the second article.

Frequently Asked Questions About Techniques for Reducing IT Costs

I found this Gartner report to be very interesting. The two points I found most useful:

• “Some 60% of respondents to a 2005 Gartner survey said they saved money on server consolidation. However, only 25% of respondents actually reduced head count. Although staffing levels can be affected by server consolidation, people working in resource-constrained IT organizations that are set free from one task are often shifted to backlogged work…”
• “Organizations that manage assets well will achieve a cost savings of 8% to 10% per managed asset within a year”.

Microsoft: Privacy Champion

This Business Week article mentions Microsoft mostly to grab attention by crafting a paradox (Microsoft doing something “good”).   I say crafted because Microsoft does a lot of “good”.

Anyway, the rest of the article is a really nice treatise on the loss of privacy in a networked world.
